Meet the Nyakagezi Gorilla Family in Mgahinga Gorilla Park –Uganda

Tracking the Nyakagezi Gorilla Family on the Volcanoes in Uganda

The Nyakagezi Gorilla Group the only Habituated Family To Visit In Mgahinga Gorilla Park

This is the most familiarized Gorilla family (Nyakagezi Gorilla Family) of the Gorilla Families found in Mgahinga Gorilla park where you track the mountain Gorillas (Gentle Giants) on the Mountains that Cook, the Virunga Volcanoes, portion of the Virunga series.  There is a number of 80 plus Gorillas on the Ugandan side of the Virunga Volcanoes and among them,10 of them make up the Nyakagezi Gorilla Family Group. This Gorilla family (Nyakegezi Gorilla Group) is the most altered/untouched Gorilla Family on the internet.

Currently the Nyakagezi Gorilla Family is housed and sheltered by Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda and has been there since the son Mark, the now heading Silverback took over from his Father Bugingo along with his brother Mafia.

What you find on various websites, involving Tour Operators is that the Nyakagezi Gorilla Family is not sheltered by Mgahinga Gorilla Park but on an expedition in Rwanda’s Volcanoes Park. Those details regarding the Nyakagezi Gorilla Family is obsolete & that safari operator, individual, has not rationalized their website. That is historical and not the present truth. It goes back to when Bugingo, now pensioned off, was the leader of the Nyakagezi Family.

Even the honoured Uganda Wildlife Authority Website imitates the previous and not current truth. Our website is not just about selling tours but efficient & correct and present details.

Incorrect details concerning the Nyakagezi Family is average on forums such as TripAdvisor where often self-chosen armchair specialists distribute wrong facts.

Since Mark has taken over the leadership of the family, the Nyakagezi Family has been and presently is located and tracked in Mgahinga Gorilla Park. The Nyakagezi family not being in Mgahinga Gorilla Park and in Rwanda on vacation. Those facts go back 6 yrs plus is not the present facts. Should this alter, we would immediately apprise our website to imitate that.

The Nyakagezi family has had perpetual occupant position in Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla Park for over 6 yrs. We would not be presenting Gorilla Tours to Mgahinga Gorilla Park if the Nyakagezi Family is not there. presently, there is an extra family that is being tracked in Mgahinga Gorilla Park, which is a present development in 2019, offering a Plan-B should the Wanderlust Spirit suddenly grab the Nyakagezi Gorilla Group.

Meet the Nyakagezi Gorilla Family – the most misrepresented Gorilla Family on the Internet:

The Nyakagezi Gorilla has become the preferred by many Gorilla Trekkers that relish tracking gentle giants (Gorillas) in the Virunga Volcanoes. There are 3 Virunga Volcanoes inside of Mgahinga Gorilla Park, and the Nyakagezi Gorilla Family can be dependably trekked inside of the park.

What makes the Nyakagezi Family exclusive is that there are presently Five Silverbacks in the Family. Two developed from Blackbacks into Silverbacks which enlarged the total of silverbacks from 3-5. The word “Nyakagezi” is revealing of the area in Mgahinga Gorilla Park that the family is positioned in. This is where they feed steadily fodder for food.

Trekking time normally takes 4 hrs. An intermediate level of fitness is recommended. The area where the Nyakagezi family wanders is more open, making it perfect for those taking photos (photographers) who want clear Gorilla Pictures without any barrier.

The Nyakagezi family was familiarized originally in 1991 in Mgahinga Gorilla Park after the park was recognized. In 1994 travelers/tourists were given permission to trek the family. For years, the head of the Nyakagezi Gorilla Family was now over 50-year-old Bugingo. Bugingo renounced, was substituted, arrogated by his son Mark. Mark was and is helped by his brother, Mafia. Bugingo has taken on the mantle of Mzee (older wise person), the elderly head in superannuation and happily performers the duty of grandfather at large. This is highly uncommon.

The tradition is that previous heads become recluses/loners. The other current silverbacks are Ndugutse and Rukundo. They were the only Blackbacks in the group. There are also 2 females and children in the family. Five silverbacks in one family are imposing. What is even more astonishing is that they apparently get along with one another. There are 2 Females & 3 youngsters. The group may alter in number or size over the next year/ two. Like with human families, so it is with gorilla families. There are deliveries, bereavements, separation, and disputes that lead to parting. Things alter but right now is a perfect period to tour the Nyakagezi Gorilla Group with more Silverbacks than most other groups in Uganda’s other Gorilla Park- Mgahinga Gorilla Park.
