10 Days Pygmy and Congo River Tour Itinerary

Day 1. Welcome to Kinshasa – Dr Congo

Hey, welcome to DRC! You will be met at the airport by a Laba Africa Expeditions guide who will be ready to take you to your hotel. You can take a tour of the city or go out and enjoy Kinshasa’s great nightlife after you check in. Please take note. You don’t have to do these things, but they will cost money.

Day 2. Local flight to Mbandaka city

There are only two flights a week to Mbandaka City, and planes are often late. The town of Mbandaka is surrounded by swamps and thick forests, which makes it feel very peaceful. This one is a daughter of the river and gives it all of its magic and a little freshness in this tropical heat with lots of heavy rain. It is still a major river crossing point between Kinshasa and Kisangani.

When we get here, we’ll drive to Llema Village to meet the local chef, who will welcome us to pygmy land with some traditional dances. We’ll then spend the night camping with the pygmies in the forest.

Day 3. Explore Pygmy Villages

After an early breakfast, we’ll go to Buya to see pygmy towns. You will have a chance to learn more about the Batwa people’s traditions and learn how they make traditional drugs, hunt, and make clothes out of trees.

Day 4. Congo River by Boat to Nkake

Take a boat to Nkake. The boat ride lasts for about six hours and goes through dense greenery. You may see some wildlife while you’re on the trip with your experienced guides.

Day 5 -6 Explore Congo river tributaries and pygmy Villages

Lake Tumba, also written as Ntomba, is a small lake in the northwest of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is in the Bikoro Territory of Equateur Province.The lake is about 765 square kilometers (295 square miles) in size, and the Irebu waterway connects it to the Congo River. During floods, water may flow into or out of the lake through this waterway.

Lake Tumba is home to 114 different kinds of fish and is an important spot for fishing. At night, the Mongo group lived in tents in a village. The lake Ntumba. We’ll be learning how to stay alive on the Congo River and in the bush while we visit forest pygmies from a different tribe and family.

Day 7: Drive to Mbandaka

In our 4×4 Land Cruisers, we will say goodbye to the locals today and head to the crazy city of Mbandaka. The trip is long, but it’s beautiful, and there are lots of things to see along the way, like small towns and busy bus stops.

Day 8: Flight to Kinshasa

We might have time to look around Mbandaka city before the trip, depending on what time it is.

Mbandaka is a city in the northwest of the Democratic Republic of the Congo that used to be called Coquilhatville until 1966.

It is on the equator, 435 miles (700 km) northeast of Kinshasa, which is the capital of the country. From 1886 on, it was the colony’s main governmental hub. It is now a busy river port at the point where the Congo and Ruki rivers meet, in the middle of the shipping line from Kinshasa to Kisangani.

Day 9: Visit the Lola Ya Banobo sanctuary

Lola ya Bonobo is the only place in the world where young bonobos can stay. It was started by Claudine André in 1994. Since 2002, the refuge has been in the Petites Chutes de la Lukaya, Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is just south of the suburb of Kimwenza.

It is written in Lingala, which is the main language of Kinshasa, and its meaning is “paradise for bonobos.” Lola ya Bonobo is home to about 60 bonobos who live in 30 hectares of primary forest. If you have time, you will go on a tour of Kinshasa and see the mask market.

Day 10: Flight back home
