Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is located in Para, not far from Murchison Falls National Park. This Rhino Sanctuary serves as the cornerstone for the rehabilitation of Uganda’s rhino population. Rhinos were nearly extinct in Uganda by the end of 1982. They’d been hunted and slain incessantly. The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is not a zoo; rather, it is a safe haven for rhinos. An electrical barrier and security workers defend them from poachers 24 hours a day. The huge sanctuary is a frontrunner in the battle to restore Uganda’s rhino population. The refuge presently has roughly 12 rhinos. Hopefully, rhinos will be reintroduced into surrounding wildlife parks shortly.

How near to the rhinos can you go in the sanctuary?

Visitors to the refuge may monitor the rhinos and get up and personalize with them. The Rhinos may be approached on foot. If you follow the directions, the creatures are not too hazardous. The Sanctuary may be included in your Uganda safari itinerary as part of a trip to Murchison Falls National Park or a chimp trekking safari in Budongo Forest.

Are there lodging and other options for overnight stays?

There is reasonable lodging, such as the recently constructed Amuka resort, which has a swimming pool and great cuisine, as well as reasonably priced eateries and even self-contained luxury tents.
