Top highest mountains in Africa. From the Atlas Mountains in North Africa with their tall peaks to Mount Kilimanjaro in East Africa, the continent is full of beautiful mountain ranges.
The different mountain groups that can be found all over Africa are home to some of the world’s highest mountains.
1. Kilimanjaro
Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa, and people come from all over the world to hike there. This is a stratovolcano mountain in the northern part of Tanzania. It is 5,895 meters above sea level. People hike up Mount Kilimanjaro along the Marangu route, the Machame route, the Lemosho route, the Shira route, and the Umbwe route. Hiking up Mount Kilimanjaro takes between 5 and 9 days to get to Uhuru Peak and back. This, however, varies on the hike’s path. The Marangu route is also the only one where visitors can stay in huts, such as the Horombo, Mandara, and Kibo huts.
Mount Kilimanjaro also has three volcanic cones. The highest point on the mountain is on Kibo, which is also where Uhuru peak is. There are also extinct volcanic cones on the mountain called Shira and Mawenzi. Moshi town is the closest town to Mount Kilimanjaro. You can drive there from Arusha or take a plane to Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport. Kilimanjaro National Park has this mountain.
2. Mount Kenya
Mount Kenya is in the middle of Kenya and is the second highest mountain in Africa. It is a famous place to go hiking. Mount Kenya is a stratovolcano that is 5,199 meters above sea level and is no longer active. The tallest peak on this mountain is called Batian. Other peaks on the mountain include Nelion, which is 5,188 meters high, and Point Lenana, which is 4,895 meters high.
There are two ways to climb Mount Kenya: the Naro Moru route and the Chogoria route. The Sirimon path is another one that people hike. People who like to hike on the mountain often take the Naro moru path. This mountain is also on the equator, and it’s about 200 km northeast of Nairobi city.
3. The Rwenzori Hill
Africa also has a lot of great mountain climbing spots. Mount Rwenzori is in the southwest of Uganda, on the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Mount Stanley’s Margherita peak, which is 5,109 meters high, is the highest point on the mountain. Mount Rwenzori is a snow-covered mountain that is part of the Rwenzori Mountains National Park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
One more impressive mountain in the Rwenzori range is Mount Speke, which is 4,890 meters high. He was one of the first people to discover Uganda, and this peak was named after him. The central circle route, the Kilembe route, and the Bukurungu route are all ways to hike up Mount Rwenzori.
4. Ras Dashen
At 4,620 meters, Ras Dashen is one of the highest mountains you can see on an African tour. It is part of the Simien Mountains National Park. To walk up and down Ras Dashen, it takes about 12 hours, but you can do it over the course of 4 days.
Debark is a town on the edge of the national park that is where most people start their journey to the top of Ras Dashen. Trekkers start their journey in Debark and follow a path that takes them through beautiful scenery and small towns that are far away before reaching the top.
5. Mount Meru
One of the tallest mountains in Africa is Mount Meru, which is in the northern part of Tanzania. Arusha National Park is home to this mountain, which is 4,562 meters above sea level. The top of Mount Meru is about 3 to 4 days away. It is a dormant stratovolcano. Also, after Mount Kilimanjaro, it is the second tallest mountain in Tanzania.
Mount Meru can be climbed via the Momella way, which also makes for a beautiful hike through the forest. Wildlife and bird species can be seen along this route, which begins at the Momella Gate. Along the Momella route, you can rest at Miriakamba Hut at 2,514 meters and Saddle Hut at 3,570 meters on your way to the top and back using the same path.
6. Karisimbi Mountain
Another well-known mountain in Africa is Mount Karisimbi, which lies on the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. At 4,507 meters high, this mountain is the highest in the Virunga hills. It is also an active volcano. The mountain of Karisimbi is also part of the Albertine rift. The walk up the mountain takes two to three days.
Karisimbi is a rough area that can be seen before or after a gorilla walk in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. Mount Bisoke, Mount Muhabura, Mount Sabinyo, Mount Mikeno, and Mount Nyamulagira are some of the Virunga mountains that are close to Karisimbi mountain. It is in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, and Rwanda that the Virunga Mountains are found.
7. Mount Elgon
The peak of Mount Elgon is 4,321 meters high and is on the border between Uganda and Kenya. Mount Elgon is also a shield volcano that has been dormant for a long time and is one of the biggest calderas in the world. The mountain is in Mount Elgon National Park, which is in the eastern part of Uganda. Mount Elgon can be hiked on a number of different routes. The most famous route is the Sasa route, which takes about 4 days to complete, including the return trip.
The Piswa route and the Sipi trail are two other hiking trails. You can see Mount Elgon from both the Ugandan side, which is about 1,110 square kilometers, and the Kenyan side, which is about 169 square kilometers. Wagagai, Sudek, Koitobos, Mubiyi, and Masaba are some of Mount Elgon’s peaks.

The tallest peak is Mount Toukbal, which is 4,167 meters high. The next highest is MÂąGoun, which is 4,071 meters high. Mount Sirwa, which is 3,304 meters high, and Mount Bou Naceur, which is 3,400 meters high, are two other peaks outside of the High Atlas. The Atlas mountain is known as Mount Chelia in Algeria. It is 2,328 meters high.
9. The Mount Guna
Mount Guna, which is in Ethiopia and is 4,120 meters high, is another one of the tallest mountains in Africa. The mountain is where the Rivers Gumara and Rib start. It is also one of the tallest mountains in the Semien Mountains.
10. Mountains of Dragon
The Dragon Mountain is in South Africa, and it is 3,482 meters high. In the Afrikaans language, it is also called Drakensberg. Along with walks on Dragon Mountain, you can also meet the San people, who are also known as bushmen.
11. Mount Moroto
Another peak in Africa is Mount Moroto, which is in the northeastern part of Ethiopia. With a height of 3,083 meters, the mountain stands out in the Karamoja area. A rock called Mount Moroto has two peaks. The tallest is called Sokodek, and the other is called Imagit. You can hike up Mount Moroto as part of either a full-day or half-day trip.
Mount Moroto is in the semi-arid area of Karamoja. It has a unique ecosystem with different types of vegetation, including savannah grasslands, scattered acacia trees, montane forests, and bamboo thickets at higher elevations. The Karamojong people can also be seen grazing their animals, like cattle, while hiking on Mount Moroto.
12. The Nyiragongo mountain
In the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mount Nyiragongo is an active stratovolcano. This mountain is 3,470 meters high and is known for the lava lake at the very top. On October 20, 2021, Mount Nyiragongo had its most recent fit. There are a lot of people who come to Virunga National Park to do the three-day Nyiragongo hike.
13. Mount Longonot
Mount Longonot is a stratovolcano that stands 2,776 meters tall and is in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley. Animals like buffalo, elands, gazelles, giraffes, bushbucks, and zebras can be seen in the area around the mountain, which is part of Mount Longonot National Park.
Mount Longonot is about 90 kilometers from Nairobi. Hiking on it takes about a day, and getting to the edge of the crater takes about an hour to two hours. Since this mountain is one of the highest in the rift valley, tourists can see both Lake Naivasha and the rift valley.
