Guided hikes along the trail begin daily at 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

The name “Irebero” means “a place to observe from,” and the beautiful views are the highlight of this hike. You can see across the Rwandan border into Burundi to the south, and Lake Kivu lies about 30 kilometers northwest. Best Time to Hike:
While the Irebero Trail can be hiked year-round, the best time to visit is from late May to early September and from December to February.

  • Half-day hikes: $15 per person

  • Full-day hikes: $25 per person
    (Hiking fees include a park guide but exclude the $100 park entry fee per person per day.)

Hike Duration:
Approximately 3 hours to cover 3.6 kilometers.

Other Hiking Trails in Nyungwe Forest

Igishigishigi Trail:
This 2.1-kilometer trail is ideal for beginners and offers excellent views of the Canopy Walkway. It takes about 2 hours to complete and starts at the Uwinka Visitor Centre.

Umugore Trail:
Stretching 3.6 kilometers, this trail offers views of Kibira National Park in Burundi and is a good spot to see monkeys and birds. Hikes start at 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. daily.

Karamba Trail:
An easy 2-kilometer trail built on a former gold mine site, popular for birdwatching. It takes around 3 hours and starts from the Gisakura Tourist Centre.

Umuyove Trail:
This 5.6-kilometer trail, known as the ‘Mahogany Trail,’ passes waterfalls and offers refreshing views. The hike lasts about 4 hours, with departures at 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

Isumo Trail:

How to Reach Nyungwe Forest

Most visitors arrive via Kigali International Airport.

  • Nyungwe Forest is 220 kilometers south of Kigali (5–6 hours by road).

  • From Huye: 100 kilometers (2–3 hours)

  • From Rusizi: 55 kilometers (about 1.5 hours)

Please note that Rwanda enforces a speed limit of 60 km/h, and visitors should adhere to it to avoid fines.
