WHAT IS THE GORILLA HABITUATION EXPERIENCE?
The Gorilla Habituation Experience is a special conservation program introduced by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) in 2014. It was designed to help wild mountain gorillas slowly adapt to the presence of human beings under controlled and ethical conditions.
During habituation, researchers and park rangers regularly follow a specific gorilla family in the forest, observing and gently guiding them until they become calm around humans. This process normally takes two to three years before the gorilla family can finally be opened for regular tourism trekking.
As a visitor, you are allowed to actively participate in this process alongside professional trackers, researchers, and armed rangers. This gives you a priceless conservation-focused experience that is more intimate and educational than normal trekking.
Only two gorilla families are currently available for the Gorilla Habituation Experience:
-
Byikyingi Family – Rushaga Sector
-
Bushaho Family – Nkuringo Sector
Both are located in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

WHERE DOES GORILLA HABITUATION TAKE PLACE?
The Gorilla Habituation Experience in Uganda is conducted exclusively in:
✅ Rushaga Sector – Southern Bwindi
✅ Nkuringo Sector – Southern Bwindi
These regions are known for steep, dramatic terrain, breathtaking landscapes, and rich biodiversity. Bwindi Forest itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home not only to mountain gorillas but also to:
-
Over 350 bird species
-
Over 120 mammal species
-
Over 1,000 plant species
-
Numerous primates including monkeys and bush babies
The dense forest, mist-covered hills, and ancient trees make Bwindi one of the most enchanting places on earth.

HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE ALLOWED PER TREK?
One of the main reasons the Gorilla Habituation Experience is so special is its strict limitation on participants.
-
Only 4 visitors are allowed per gorilla family per day
-
Only 8 permits are issued per day in total
-
Each trek lasts up to 4 hours, starting from when the gorillas are located
This exclusivity guarantees a peaceful and uninterrupted experience for both the gorillas and the visitors.
Because of this limited availability, Monumental Expeditions and Safaris strongly advises booking your permit at least 3 – 4 months in advance, especially if you plan to travel in the peak season.

BEST TIME TO BOOK GORILLA HABITUATION IN UGANDA
The Gorilla Habituation Experience is available all year round, but the best time to book is during Uganda’s dry seasons, when forest trails are less muddy and trekking is easier:
⭐ June – August (Peak dry season)
⭐ December – February (Short dry season)
These months offer:
-
Better hiking conditions
-
Less rainfall
-
Clear photography opportunities
-
Higher gorilla visibility
However, Bwindi is a tropical rainforest, which means rain can fall at any time—even during dry months. That’s why proper preparation is essential for your trek.
Even during the rainy seasons (March–May & September–November), the experience still takes place. In fact, some travelers prefer this time because of fewer crowds and greener landscapes.
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING YOUR FOUR HOURS WITH THE GORILLAS
Unlike standard gorilla trekking, where you observe fully habituated gorillas for just one hour, habituation trekking offers four immersive hours in the wild.
You will:
-
Follow their daily movements
-
Watch them feed, groom, and play
-
Observe young gorillas interacting
-
Witness dominant silverbacks moving through the forest
-
Learn scientific behavior insights from researchers
However, keep in mind that these gorillas are still semi-habituated. That means:
-
They can be shy at times
-
They may move or hide in thick vegetation
-
The trek can be physically demanding
This authentic wilderness element is what makes the encounter so special and raw.
WHAT TO PACK FOR GORILLA HABITUATION
To enjoy your trek comfortably, you should pack:
✅ Waterproof hiking boots
✅ Long-sleeved shirt and trousers
✅ Gardening gloves (for stinging nettles)
✅ Light rain jacket or poncho
✅ Hat and sunscreen
✅ Camera with extra batteries
✅ Walking stick (provided at briefing point)
✅ Packed lunch and water
A good level of fitness is recommended due to the uneven terrain, steep slopes, and long walking distances.
