Day-by-day schedule of a 5-day gorilla and chimp trekking tour in Rwanda

Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park on Day 1.

You will be met by our driver guide who will transport you to Nyungwe Forest National Park, with optional lunch stops on route. Proceed to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

 

Day 2: Chimpanzee trekking and a canopy walk in Nyungwe Forest National Park.

You will rise early for breakfast at 6:30 a.m., and the lodge will provide you with a packed lunch and plenty of drinking water as you go to the park headquarters to join other trekkers for a briefing by the guide/rangers on the dos and don’ts of chimp trekking. You will next continue to the jungle in search of the chimpanzees. The trip will take between 2 hours to half a day, depending on how the chimps are behaving on that particular day. You will have one hour with them once you find them. You will then return to the lodge.

In the evening, you may go for a canopy walk in Nyungwe forest, where you will be able to see many plant species, birds, and animal species that live there. Dinner and accommodation at your lodge.

 

Transfer to Volcanoes National Park on Day 3

After an early breakfast, check out of the lodge and begin your drive from Nyungwe Forest National Park to Volcanoes National Park, stopping for lunch en route and continuing to the park. Check into the lodge for dinner and a night’s lodging.

 

Day 4: Gorilla trekking and an afternoon cultural excursion to Iby’iwacu.

Set off with the driving guide after breakfast on an early morning to join other trekkers for a briefing on the gorillas at the park headquarters. Following the briefing, you will be separated into groups of eight people and, at approximately 8:00 a.m., you will begin your gorilla trekking into the jungle, accompanied by park rangers.

Meeting these massive Apes face to face and witnessing them participate in their everyday routines such as eating, nursing young ones, nesting, and so on is always a fascinating and unique experience. You will be permitted one hour with them from the time you meet them, but the exercise can run anywhere from 2 to 8 hours depending on where the gorillas are that day.

Other creatures that can be seen include grey-cheeked L’Hoest’s monkeys, buffalos, black-fronted duikers, bushbucks, bushpigs, spotted hyenas, black and white colobus, white colobus, baboons, and red-tailed monkeys. as well as several birds.

In the evening, you may have a cultural stroll in the surrounding Iby’iwacu cultural community, where you will be entertained and shown their distinct cultural features, such as dance, art and craft, and others. Dinner and accommodation at your lodge.

 

Transfer to Kigali on Day 5

After an early morning breakfast, check out of the resort and journey to Kigali airport. You will have lunch en route, and the driver guide will leave you off at the airport or your desired drop-off spot. This is the final day of your 5-day gorilla and chimp trekking safari.
