Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary has a fascinating history. During the early twentieth century, Uganda’s tourism sector flourished due to its rich wildlife, including a large population of white rhinos in Kidepo Valley National Park and Murchison Falls National Park. The presence of these rhinos was a significant factor in the growth of tourism. However, during the late 1970s and early 1980s, poaching increased due to instability, resulting in the extinction of wild white rhinos in Uganda’s national parks.

Despite this setback, efforts to reintroduce white rhinos into Uganda were initiated. In 2005, the Rhino Fund Uganda was established, in collaboration with the Uganda Wildlife Authority. The goal was to reintroduce rhinos into the wild in the future. It was decided that a sanctuary would be necessary to serve as a breeding area away from poachers. Thus, the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary was created, starting with six rhinos (two from Disneyland in the United States and four from Kenya) and an area of 70 square kilometers, protected by a 2-meter-high electric fence.

The sanctuary, located in Nakasongola District, is situated along the Kampala-Gulu Highway, just before Murchison Falls National Park. Today, the sanctuary is home to 35 white rhinos, thanks to the dedicated work of researchers, rangers, and donors. The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is one of Uganda’s most significant conservation efforts and is considered one of the top 20 places to visit during a Ugandan safari. It is the only location in Uganda where tourists can track and photograph endangered white rhinos on foot, and Uganda is one of the few countries in the world where the Big Five (lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and buffaloes) can be seen, largely due to the sanctuary.

1. Rhino Tracking: The primary activity at the sanctuary is rhino tracking. This provides an exciting opportunity to get up close to these majestic creatures. The program consists of a 1- to 2-hour guided walk or drive through the sanctuary. Visitors are driven near the rhinos and then walk on foot to get within 10 meters of them. 2. Bird Watching: Birding is another popular activity at the sanctuary. The sanctuary is home to over 350 bird species, many of which are also found in Murchison Falls National Park. In addition to rhinos, the sanctuary is home to mammals such as Ground Squirrels, Bush Duiker, Oribi, Jackson’s Hartebeests, and various species of primates like the Vervet Monkey and Black-and-white Colobus Monkey. The sanctuary is also home to reptiles, butterflies, and insects, providing a diverse wildlife experience.

Note: For international visitors, the fee for activities such as nature walks, birding, and night walks is typically a flat rate of $30. Packages combining rhino tracking with these activities cost $65. Visitors who simply wish to enter the sanctuary will pay the entrance fee. It is recommended to arrange visits through a tour company, which will help with transportation, lodging, and activity fees.

Rules and Guidelines for Rhino Tracking at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

As with any reputable wildlife sanctuary, there are specific rules that visitors must follow. Failure to adhere to these regulations may result in a $100 fine. The sanctuary’s guides have the authority to end any activity if the rules are not followed. The following guidelines should be respected:

• Always follow the guides’ instructions.

• Report any illegal animal deaths to the Rhino Fund Reception.

• Unguided tours are prohibited, especially after 5:30 p.m.

• Feeding or petting the animals is prohibited for both safety and ethical reasons.

• Littering is strictly forbidden.

• Cycling and jogging are not permitted in the sanctuary.

• Declare any suspicious items, such as firearms, GPS devices, pets, or drones, at the gate.

• Minimize noise, and keep your cell phone on silent while with the animals.

What to Bring for Rhino Tracking

To ensure an enjoyable experience at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, be prepared for your adventure by bringing the essentials. Make sure you have a valid passport, visa, and yellow fever vaccination card. Also, pack local currency, a local SIM card, and medical/travel insurance. Rhino tracking is less physically demanding than activities like gorilla trekking, so wear comfortable clothes, such as a light shirt and neutral-colored pants. In case of rain, bring a waterproof jacket or sweater. During the dry season, wear comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses, and a hat.

Additionally, consider packing items such as bug repellent, pain relievers, vitamins, a toothbrush, anti-malarial medication, hand sanitizer, toothpaste, hair shampoo, Vaseline, lip balm, flashlights, and a camera.

Accommodation at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

The Rhino Fund Uganda established Amuka Lodge within the sanctuary to provide comfortable accommodations for visitors. The lodge, which features beautiful wood, natural stone, and canvas finishes, has eight units, including four luxury rooms with private bathrooms and terraces. The lodge offers both international and local cuisine, including the famous Rolex. Additional amenities include a well-stocked bar, a swimming pool, and 24-hour power. Ten percent of the lodge’s earnings support rhino conservation efforts.
