There are only 96 permits available per day, each costing US$1,500 for a one-hour visit. Travelers who spend at least three days in either Nyungwe Forest National Park or Akagera National Park between November and May can enjoy a 30% discount, reducing the cost to US$1,050 per person. These permits help fund the 24-hour security for each gorilla group, support conservation efforts, and benefit local communities.

Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park is the premier location for gorilla trekking in Rwanda. The park’s mountainous terrain and dense jungle forest provide a challenging yet rewarding experience, where visitors can see mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Trekking groups are limited to a maximum of eight people, with the distance and terrain determined by the location of the habituated gorilla group. Though the trek can be physically demanding due to steep slopes and high altitude (over 2,500 meters), it offers an unforgettable experience of watching gorillas interact, feed, and observe visitors with curiosity. It’s important to follow strict guidelines to protect the gorillas, who are vulnerable to human diseases such as colds.

Mountain Gorilla Groups in Volcanoes National Park

Several gorilla groups in Volcanoes National Park are habituated for trekking. These groups frequently shift their locations depending on the season and environmental factors. The most prominent groups include:

• The Susa Gorilla Group, with 38 members, including three silverbacks, is the largest group and was first studied by Dian Fossey. It is located high on Mount Karisimbi.

• The Sabyinyo Gorilla Group, consisting of about 17 individuals, is often found near the Sabyinyo and Gahinga mountains.

• The Agashya Group, formerly known as Group Thirteen, is now led by the dominant silverback, Agashya.

• The Amahoro Group, with 19 members, is led by the peaceful silverback, Ubumwe.

• The Umubano Group, located between Mount Karisoke and Bisoke, has 13 members and is known for its gentle nature.

• The Kwitonda Group, with around 23 members, has crossed into Rwanda from the DRC and is now led by silverback Akarevuro.

• The Hirwa Group, with 18 members, was formed by merging groups from the Sabyinyo and Agashya families.
