Rwenzori Mountains National Park offers several hiking routes that allow visitors to explore the unique landscapes and biodiversity of the Rwenzori Mountains. Here are some of the main hiking routes in the park.

 

Rwenzori Mountaineering Expedition (Central Circuit)

This is the most popular and challenging trek in the park, taking you through various zones and offering stunning views. It typically takes 7-9 days to complete the full circuit, depending on your chosen itinerary. The route includes passing through forests, traversing valleys, crossing rivers, and ascending to higher altitudes where you can witness glaciers and snow-capped peaks.

 

Kilembe Trail

The Kilembe Trail starts from the town of Kilembe and provides an alternative route to the Central Circuit. This trail is usually shorter and less demanding, ranging from 4-6 days. It takes you through the Nyamwamba Valley and offers beautiful views of the peaks and vegetation.

 

Bwamba Pass

The Bwamba Pass is a shorter trek that starts at the northeastern edge of the park and leads to Lake Albert. It typically takes 2-3 days to complete and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape and the Albertine Rift Valley.

 

Kazingo-Nyamwamba Valley Trail

This trail is a shorter option that begins near the park headquarters and explores the scenic Nyamwamba Valley. It is typically a 2-3 day hike, allowing you to experience the lower altitude zones of the park.

 

Mahoma Trail

The Mahoma Trail is a day hike that provides a glimpse of the lower slopes and forested areas of the Rwenzori Mountains. It starts from the park headquarters and offers an opportunity to see various bird species, monkeys, and beautiful waterfalls.

 

It’s important to note that the Rwenzori Mountains are known for their challenging terrain and unpredictable weather conditions. Hiking in the park requires proper preparation, including obtaining permits, hiring experienced guides, and having the appropriate gear.
