How to See Gorillas in Uganda

If you’re planning an unforgettable wildlife experience, gorilla trekking in Uganda should be at the top of your list. Uganda is one of the few countries in the world where you can see endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. This comprehensive guide answers all your questions on how to see gorillas in Uganda, including how to book permits, when to go, what to pack, and how to get there.

Why Choose Uganda for Gorilla Trekking?

Uganda is home to over 21 habituated gorilla families, mostly located in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, with one group in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. These families are available for trekking year-round.

For an extended experience, Uganda offers the exclusive Gorilla Habituation Experience, allowing you to spend up to 4 hours with mountain gorillas alongside researchers and guides — an opportunity not widely available elsewhere.

Gorilla Trekking Permits in Uganda

To trek gorillas in Uganda, a gorilla trekking permit is required. This allows you to spend one hour observing a gorilla family in the wild.

Current Permit Costs:

  • Foreign non-residents: $800 per person
  • Foreign residents: $700 per person
  • East African citizens: UGX 300,000

The Gorilla Habituation Experience permit costs $1,500 and gives you four hours with semi-habituated gorillas in Bwindi.

Tip: Book permits 2–3 months in advance as availability is limited and high in demand.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi and Mgahinga is possible all year, but the best time is during the dry seasons:

  • January to February
  • June to early September

During these months, forest trails are less slippery and visibility is improved.

How to Book Gorilla Permits in Uganda

You can book through the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) or a trusted tour operator like Monumental Expeditions and Safaris.

Booking Process:

  1. Choose your travel dates.
  2. Email your request to info@gorillatrackings.com.
  3. Availability will be checked and confirmed.
  4. Receive and pay an invoice.
  5. Permits are purchased and scanned copies sent to you.

Permits are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, so early booking is essential.

Gorilla Trekking Age Limit

The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years. There is no maximum age, but participants must be reasonably fit.

For older trekkers, sedan chair carriers are available in Bwindi. They cost around $400–$500 and can be hired in advance or on the day of the trek.

What to Pack for Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla trekking involves walking through dense forest, steep slopes, and possibly muddy conditions. Here’s what to bring:

  • Insect repellent
  • Flashlight with spare batteries
  • Wet wipes
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Camera and extra batteries
  • Hiking boots and thick socks
  • Gardening gloves
  • Rain jacket
  • Lightweight, long-sleeved shirt and pants
  • Sweater or fleece
  • Sunscreen and hat
  • Swimwear (optional)
  • Binoculars (for bird watching)

How to Get to Bwindi Forest National Park

By Road:

The southern sectors (Rushaga and Nkuringo) are accessible from Kampala or Entebbe by road — a journey of approximately 8–9 hours. Turn off at Muko on the Kabale-Kisoro road and follow signs to your lodge.

By Air:

You can fly from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield to Kisoro Airstrip.

  • Airlines: Aerolink Uganda and Fly Uganda
  • Pre-arranged road transfer needed from airstrip to the park
