Camping tours in Rwanda’s Akagera National Park provide a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself in the wilderness. The park’s campgrounds offer a true outdoor experience, bringing you closer to nature.

Camping allows you to leave behind the developed world and engage in fun and memorable activities in more natural environments. It provides a great chance for romantic evenings with a partner or an opportunity for friends and family to bond. Campers can enjoy the sounds of crickets at night, while local guides share captivating folk tales. In the early morning, the melodious song of birds fills the air, creating a peaceful atmosphere.

Campsites in Akagera National Park

Akagera National Park offers several camping options, catering to different budgets, from affordable to mid-range and luxury. While you can rent tents from the park’s reception, it is advisable to bring your own camping equipment, as the park’s supplies are limited, especially for more casual camping styles.

There are three main campsites within the park: Muyumbu, Shakani, and Mutumba. Muyumbu is perched on a ridge with views of Tanzania’s lakes, offering a picturesque backdrop at sunrise. Shakani, located by a lake, provides a lakeside camping experience with the sounds of hippos and a variety of bird species. The Mutumba campsite is located in the park’s northern region, surrounded by abundant wildlife and rolling grasslands.

Camping at Shakani Campsite

Shakani offers a lakeside camping experience, where visitors can wake up to the sounds of birds and local hippos. It is the only campsite with running water, flushing toilets, and solar-heated showers, making it a comfortable option for those seeking basic amenities in a natural setting.

Camping at Mutumba and Muyumbu Campsites

Located on a hill, Mutumba offers stunning views of Lake Ihema and Lake Shakani. It is the closest campsite to the park’s gate in Kayonza. All three campsites have toilets and washrooms, though it is important to note that the tap water is not safe to drink. It is recommended to either boil the water before drinking or bring bottled water with you. Firewood is provided, and tents can be rented at the reception.

Camping at Mihindi Campsite

Located in the park’s northern section, Mihindi offers a comfortable camping experience with amenities including flush toilets, solar-heated showers, and two rondavels with BBQ facilities. The former research building has been converted into a café, and a picnic area is available for day visitors.
