The History of Gorilla Trekking in the Nkuringo Sector

Gorilla trekking in Nkuringo dates back to 1997, when the first gorilla family in this area was officially habituated for tourism. Since then, the region has grown steadily into a top gorilla-tracking destination. Today, there are three habituated gorilla families in the Nkuringo sector, each giving visitors an unforgettable opportunity to observe mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

One of the most famous groups in this region is the Nkuringo Gorilla Family, which was originally led by the dominant silverback Rafiki. He was known for his strength, leadership, and ability to hold the group together in a challenging environment. Is Gorilla Trekking Safe?

In December 2004, something historic happened — the Nkuringo family became the only sector in southern Bwindi to record the birth of gorilla twins. This rare and remarkable event attracted international attention and reinforced Nkuringo’s significance in global gorilla conservation efforts.

Unfortunately, in the early 2000s, the Nkuringo gorillas were hit by a scabies epidemic, which led to the tragic loss of several members. By the time the outbreak was contained, only one gorilla family remained in this part of Bwindi. Through conservation, veterinary intervention, and protection, the gorillas recovered — and today, the sector is once again thriving.

  • Thick vegetation

  • Slippery paths (especially during rainy seasons)
